We investigate new "multilevel" coding principes for 2D bar codes for multimedia and security applications.

Modulation in multilevel bar codes

(Left) Square halftone cell of a-by-a dots and  (right) Array of halftone cells.

New 2d bar codes from SIP group

Multilevel 2D bar code. (left) Original digital image (with 2x2 pixels per symbol and 1 pixel of inter-symbol space) where each symbol corresponds to some gray scale value and (right) Printed-and-scanned digital image (printing resolution 600 dpi, scanning resolution 600 ppi, 6x6 pixels per noisy symbol). Each graphical symbol represents the encoded grayscale value.
