Overview

The workshop on Multimedia search and processing in large databases will be held on the 17 - 18 of February 2011 at University of Geneva, Switzerland. The workshop consists of two talks, which will be given by internationally distinguished invited speakers. Additionally, the talks will be followed by panel discussions on the issues, challenges and open research questions. The participants of the workshop will be primarily researchers and PhD students, although Masters level students are also invited.

Participation is free of charge for all members of the "troisième Cycle" (i.e. EPFL, Universities of Fribourg, Geneva, Lausanne and Neuchâtel). Lunches and coffee breaks are also free of charge. The travel cost will be reimbursed: upto CHF 35,- per day per person for public transport.

Topic

Modern large-scale multimedia processing and management systems are facing several major problems that should be considered jointly: the accuracy of the search, its efficiency; the memory usage of the representation; as well as privacy and security. In most cases these conflicting requirements are treated separately and there are only several publications on the joint analysis of these problems.  Therefore, the goal of this workshop is to introduce a unified consideration of these problems, to present current approaches and to instigate a discussion concerning possible new and interdisciplinary directions.

Participants will have a chance to ask questions and discuss their open research issues with the invited speakers during the open panels. Therefore, participants are highly welcome to prepare posters or powerpoint slides (upto 5 min.) to stimulate discussion with the invited speakers and the audience.
